iPhone SE 3 in the works - why it makes sense in India

When the world is talking about the next Apple flagship in the form of the iPhone 14, India continues to be obsessed by the iPhone SE. And with good reason. It is among the best compact smartphones available around here and a ready option for those who believe phones are primarily meant to make and receive calls.

Reports of a third iteration of the cheaper iPhone SE are doing the rounds and the  iPhone SE 3 may arrive in March or April next year. This news may excite many Apple fans in India, who aspired for an iPhone but couldn't afford the flagship model due to its ultra-premium price.

What's new in the device?

Besides the size of the device, that does matter, the reports suggest that the iPhone SE 3 will have 5G connectivity, a familiar design and possibly the Bionic A15 chipset. In case the device sports the latest processor, and Apple prices it right, this handset could well cannibalize the iPhone 13 Mini, something the company wouldn't want.

Unlike the second-generation iPhone SE, which had a 64GB internal storage base variant, the iPhone SE 3 might come with a minimum of 128GB of internal storage. There are rumours around the presence of a dual-camera setup at the back, and the phone might still come with a 4.7-inches LCD panel.

The iPhone SE 3 makes sense in India

The iPhone SE launched at Rs. 42,500 in India. However, the critical factor was that the phone was sold with massive discounts during online sales hosted by Amazon and Flipkart

In fact, this phone did so well in India that Apple had to rethink its product strategy for the country. Apple CEO Tim Cook reportedly said, “it's still in the line today and is sort of our entry price point. And so I’m pleased with how all of them are doing and I think we need sort of that range of price points to accommodate the types of people that we want to accommodate.”

Although Cook did not explicitly mention it, the iPhone SE 2020 became the highest selling iPhone in India. The demand in countries like India, Brazil, and Vietnam was so huge that Apple had to make a note and probably plan a successor.

To date, the iPhone SE is still going strong, and can be bought at a rebate on Flipkart under a special discount offer. The iPhone SE 2020 is available to purchase Rs. 27,999 on Flipkart bundled with a year’s subscription of Disney Plus Hotstar.

For the section of price-sensitive smartphone users who are brand conscious as well, the iPhone SE 3 could be a perfect device. Unlike the western countries, where the acquisition price of phones is relatively lower thanks to the contracts, smartphones' success is defined by the upfront cost and the discount offers. If priced correctly, the iPhone SE 3 can easily become a gateway for people to experience the Apple ecosystem and gradually upgrade if the budget allows.
