Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League release date, trailers, news and rumors

Hungry for details on Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, Rocksteady’s next triple-A outing? Then you’ve come to the right place.

Since its announcement at the DC FanDome presentation in 2020, we've learned that the game is set in the Arkham-verse Metropolis and will give players the choice between playing solo or with up to four players via online co-op. There’ll be four playable characters to choose from, each with their own “unique moveset” and “enhanced traversal abilities”: Harley Quinn (Dr. Harleen Quinzel), Deadshot (Floyd Lawton), King Shark (Nanaue), and Captain Boomerang (George “Digger” Harkness).

Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League is scheduled to release in 2022, the same year as WB Montreal’s Gotham Knights, so it’s safe to say 2022 is a big year for DC fans. When it does launch, Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League will be available to play on PS5, Xbox Series X and PC.

We're expecting to learn more about the game during 2021's DC FanDome in October but in the meantime we've gathered together all the latest news and rumors about Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League below.

Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League key facts

  • What is it? A Suicide Squad game from Rocksteady
  • When can I play it? 2022
  • What can I play it on? PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S and PC

The announcement of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League was confirmed on August 7, 2020 via the game's official Twitter account.

An image of Superman facing away with a target locked upon his head revealing the games' title confirmed its existence before pointing fans to DC FanDome, a virtual online convention due to take place later that month - where Rocksteady officially unveiled the Suicide Squad game's 2022 release window and first trailer.

Outside of a 2022 release window, Rocksteady and Warner Bros. have yet to give a specific release date for Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League.

Historically the developer has launched games between May and October, giving us a slight indication of what date the Suicide Squad game could land on.

  • Urban Chaos: Riot Response – May 19th (Europe) and June 13th (North America)
  • Batman: Arkham Asylum – August 25th, 2009
  • Batman: Arkham City – October 18th, 2011
  • Batman: Arkham Knight- June 23rd, 2015
  • Batman: Arkham VR – October 11th, 2016

Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League trailers

As part of DC FanDome on August 22, 2020, Rocksteady premiered the first trailer of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League. It opens with a look at what seems to be supervillain Brainiac's lair, before confirming the game's location as Metropolis. Panning down we get the reveal of Harley Quinn, followed by her fellow Task Force X members: Captain Boomerang, Deadshot, and King Shark.

Suicide Squad instigator Amanda Waller speaks to Quinn through comms telling them to make their way to the Metropolis Grand Hotel as "alpha target" is now in the open and needs engaging. After a montage where the group takes on hordes of Brainiac's army - to OutKast's B.O.B – Bombs Over Baghdad - they reconverge on a roof. Quinn then tries to remember who they should be on the lookout for, until being suddenly interrupted by a helicopter explosive.

As the smoke clears, it appears that Superman has saved the helicopter pilot – only to decimate the human moments later via heat vision, while seemingly under the control of Brainiac. The group quickly realize that the Man of Steel is their "alpha target", and the trailer ends as a boomerang comically hits Superman's head, with Captain Boomerang uttering: "You shouldn't have done that, shark".

New Artwork

Ahead of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League’s next big reveal at DC FanDome on October 16, some new key art has been released. The Artwork gives us a fresh look at the game’s four main playable characters: Harley Quinn, Deadshot, Captain Boomerang and King Shark. We don’t know when exactly during DC FanDome the game will make an appearance but we can be sure it’ll be present in some capacity during the show.

No more additional characters?

It looks like Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League won’t be expanding its roster of playable characters beyond the four that have already been confirmed. As reported by PCGamesN, a recent press release for the game states that “The game’s original narrative follows the four Suicide Squad members as they take on an impossible mission to save Earth and kill the World’s Greatest DC Super Heroes,” which strongly suggests no more will be added. This definitely casts doubt on previous rumors that the game will be an evolving live service title in the style of Marvel’s Avengers.

DC FanDome returns and Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League is on the lineup

DC has confirmed that its online event DC FanDome will be making a return in 2021, specifically on October 16 and a recent trailer has Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League on the lineup. What exactly we'll learn about the game remains unclear but we do at least now know we can expect to see it in some capacity during the show.

It was during the 2020 iteration of the show that Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League was first revealed to the world so this is a perfect time for an update, especially as the game didn't make an appearance during E3 2021. Alongside Gotham Knights (which will also be present) it’s one of the major superhero games that DC has in the works.

Gotham Knights delayed

Gotham Knights, the DC game announced alongside Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League has recently been delayed, its release date moving from sometime in 2021 to sometime in 2022. This means that both games are set to launch in the same year, making 2022 a big one for DC fans.

At the moment, there’s no indication that Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League will be delayed like its more heroic counterpart, as Suicide Squad was already slated for a 2022 release and is in development with a separate studio.

Is Warner Bros Interactive leaning into live service?

According to a recently spotted advert for an internship (via IGN), Warner Bros Interactive Entertainment’s upcoming projects are going to have a “heavy focus on live service”.

There’s a section of the advert which states that “WBIE is currently involved in a variety of new projects, ranging from casual games to core games featuring our well-known franchises on all platforms (console, digital, mobile) with a heavy focus on live service. “

Generally, live service elements in a game will see it being updated by its developer after release with things like new features or storylines. It’s not uncommon in games these days and can be effective when done right but it can also be controversial when a game doesn’t get off to a strong start eg. Marvel’s Avengers.

Although Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League isn’t referred to directly here, it is one of the games that Warner Bros will be publishing in the next couple of years. However, Rocksteady hasn’t actually confirmed that there will be any live service elements in Kill the Justice League, so at the moment we can't be sure if they're have any involvement in Kill the Justice League.

Gotham Knights developer WB Games Montreal has told IGN that that its co-op and single-player game won’t involve games-as-a-service elements, which means that there’s no guarantee every game published by Warner Bros Interactive Entertainment is going to be subject to this. Certainly, we haven’t seen any clear evidence that Suicide Squad will include live service elements and as result, we’re going to need to wait for official confirmation from Rocksteady before we can be sure.

Mugshots

News on Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League is still in fairly short supply since the game isn't expected until 2022. However, the official Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League Twitter account has tweeted out some neat mugshots of the game's playable characters which you can see below:

Singleplayer and co-op

Kill the Justice League is a game that will appeal to those who like single-player and co-op gameplay as its main campaign supports both.

Rocksteady revealed at DC FanDome that players who opt for solo play will be able to switch between other members of the squad as they please, with the uncontrolled team members being handled by AI to play alongside you.

If you want friends to join you, they can jump into the shoes of the squad members you don’t want, with up to four players able to play at once. According to Rocksteady, this is going to be a seamless gameplay experience and the co-op will be drop-in, drop-out, so you can have friends playing with you one minute and go solo the next without it impacting your game.

Story
Details of the campaign are limited for the time being, except that we know that it is an "original narrative" set in the DC universe and a continuation of the Batman: Arkham-verse. Implanted with lethal explosives in their heads, the story follows the Suicide Squad as they look to save Earth and kill the world's greatest DC superheroes, The Justice League.

Superman is the only member to have been shown off so far but we're pretty confident in saying the likes of Wonder Woman, Aquaman, the Flash, Batman and so forth, will appear in throughout. The latter of which will be an interesting conundrum, considering how Batman: Arkham Knight ended. Several rumors suggest The Dark Knight might work alongside the Suicide Squad in their attempts to thwart the mind-controlled Justice League.

During the DC FanDome panel, Rocksteady creative director Sefton Hill spoke about the narrative links that will continue on from the Arkham series, stating that: "a lot of through threads and storylines you're gonna see come to fruition in this game".

Open-world
Metropolis itself will serve as the open-world in Rocksteady's Suicide Squad. The city is best known as the home of Superman, takes inspiration from the likes of Toronto and New York, while also being neighbors with Gotham. Hill described Metropolis as the game's "fifth character" and hopes it will serve as a "love letter to DC fans".

Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League King Shark

Voice actors
So far, two out of the four Suicide Squad members have been confirmed, with long-time Harley Quinn veteran voice actor Tara Strong resuming the role once more. King Shark, on the other hand, will be voiced by WWE wrestler Nuufolau Joel Seanoa a.k.a. Samoa Joe.

While no official word on the voice of Captain Boomerang, it's heavily rumored that Chris Parson has been given the role. He previously voiced Junkrat in Overwatch and there is a huge resemblance when listening to the two.

Deadshot is a little harder to pin down. Chris Cox previously voiced the one-shot wonder in Arkham City and Arkham Origins, both of which are set in the same universe. This Deadshot has been confirmed to be the Floyd Lawton interpretation of the character too, however, there's a huge gaping flaw why it doesn't seem to be Cox that's returning.

For one, the audio clip sounds nothing like his version, and two – the most damming - this Deadshot is black, as opposed to the white version Cox portrayed. Therefore, without an established voice immediately jumping out at people, many believe it may be an up-and-comer. However, King Shark was killed in the direct-to-video Assault on Arkham, so the question of what is actually 'canon' is very much up in the air.

The last unconfirmed role we hear in the trailer (Superman doesn't speak) is Amanda Wallace. CCH Pounder has voiced the Suicide Squad boss in Arkham Origins, Arkham Origins Blackgate, and Assault on Arkham, therefore, it's not out of the realms of possibility that she will return once again/

Lego Batman star Will Arnett (who hosted the DC Fandome panel) also asked if he could appear in the game as an NPC, to which Hill replied that: "I think we can maybe make something work". Something that would certainly make for a cool easter egg.

TechRadar reached out to Warner Bros. for confirmation of the voice actors, however, the company refused to comment at this time.

The first Honor foldable phone could be launching soon

It's been a while since we last heard rumors about a foldable phone from Honor, but a fresh leak suggests a foldable called the Honor Magic X could be launching imminently – and may even see the light of day before the end of the year.

This latest tip comes from Huawei Fans on Chinese social media network Weibo (via Notebookcheck), and offers up the tidbit that the incoming handset is going to be built along similar lines to the Huawei Mate X2.

Honor originally started out as a spin-off brand for Huawei of course, so it makes sense that the two companies are still sharing some technical information – and as the Mate X2 is a very decent foldable phone, most people are unlikely to be disappointed with the news.

More to come

The only other tips that this source offers up are that the foldable is likely to be out before the end of the year, and that Honor has a lot of confidence in it. That potential launch window matches up with what we heard back in February.

An unfolded screen size of around 8 inches has previously been talked about, which matches the size of the Huawei Mate X2. On the inside, we might see the phone powered by the Snapdragon 888 or the Snapdragon 888 Plus.

Honor might not be stopping there either: the rumors are that it's also developing a clamshell-style foldable to take on the Motorola Razr and the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3, though up to this point we've not heard too much about it.

Analysis: here come the foldables

Foldable phones aren't a new idea at this point, but it does feel as though mid-2021 marks something of a watershed moment – a moment when this form factor went from niche and experimental to something that mainstream buyers would consider picking up.

That's almost entirely down to the arrival of the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 and the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3, two phones that are well-made, well-specced, and not completely unaffordable. While early foldable phones had questions around their reliability, that's not the case with these too.

With Honor, Google, and others expected to enter the fray soon, anyone interested in picking up a foldable phone is going to be spoilt for choice. In the near future we might see sales of these units actually reaching a noticeable share of the market.

A lot of that still depends on the price of course – foldable phones remain very much at the expensive end of the smartphone spectrum. The technology they use means foldables will stay pricey for now, but we're hoping that Honor manages to stick to its traditions and bring out something that's reasonably affordable.

How to buy a refurbished phone: the promises and pitfalls of going second hand

New phone time comes for us all. Whether through age, damage, market competition or otherwise, our mobile devices inevitably lose their luster, and so comes the point when they need to be retired to make way for new blood.

Finding a new phone is a difficult proposition, there have never been so many new options to choose from, and finding the right one can become an overwhelming obsession. But what if the right phone isn’t in fact new?

Last year’s flagship devices will often offer better performance in almost all categories (camera, power, display, battery etc) than mid-range competitors launched the year after, and at a very similar price point. So why doesn’t everyone buy old?

Whether pre-loved or pre-hurt, finding not only the right device but one in the right state of repair can be a significant challenge in itself. While there are a host of players offering refurbished devices for sale, each has their own standards of repair and not all are equal.

Read on for our guide on buying refurbished devices, what to look for and what to avoid.

A Question of Trust

When buying a new phone, the transaction is simple - you are the first owner and the device will be pristine. When buying refurbished, things become a little more complicated. If ‘New’ is the perfect state a device can be in, everything that then follows is in degrees of degradation from that point.

There are a host of players selling refurbished phones both domestically and internationally. These can range widely in quality and service, though some may offer attractive price-tags they may come with significant caveats in tow.

A good example of this can be found in Gumtree/Craigslist or equivalent. Many devices in varying states of repair can be found, but care needs to be taken to ensure you have a positive transaction.

If this is your preferred route, make sure that the device you have picked is listed with photos of it in hand and powered on. Placeholder listings with stock imagery should be avoided like the plague.

The seller should list the general state of repair, listing any cosmetic or further damage to the device, and they should be responsive to any questions you might have. If they want to make an exchange in person, never go alone, and if they want cash then run for the hills as the device in question may be a little ‘too hot to handle’.

Away from the Wild West that is the Gumtree/Craiglist field, things improve considerably.

Most professional refurbishers will list devices with a condition grade, which will range from the equivalent of A+ (Mint/Excellent) to C (Average). They will post images of the device in use and powered on, will be responsive to questions asked and will often offer a limited guarantee on devices purchased, usually for six months.

While it may seem that all condition grading schemes are the same, it is always worth looking at the grading offered by your seller of choice, different options have differing standards.

As might be expected given the smartphone boom, there are host of options to choose from when it comes to professional refurbishers. Many smartphone manufacturers, from Apple and Samsung to others, offer official refurb stores. Following this, many carriers will offer refurbished devices for sale, as will retailers such as department stores and electronics chains.

With so much choice on offer, it can be a little easy to get lost however. Luckily there are more generalist options available which guarantee a similar level of quality while offering more powerful search options.

Choosing an online marketplace

The first such option is the venerable eBay, though it has diminished in standing from years past, it still offers a host of interesting opportunities. Here you can search by device for options which might interest you. Many retailers have online outlets which are managed through eBay, we would recommend that you should give these priority over others due to the increased ease of return if necessary.

With eBay, the usual provisos apply. If you are using the approved storefront of a known retailer, you can relax slightly. Should you choose to go down an alternate route, ensure that the device you hope to purchase is pictured with it in the ‘on’ state in in use at least once.

Other options than eBay exist of course, an interesting alternative in Europe and the USA is Back Market. Acting as a marketplace exclusively for refurbished phones, this has gained significant traction in Europe since its inception and is now expanding to the UK as well as the USA.

User reviews are placed front and centre, condition reports are detailed clearly and each sale comes with a relatively robust returns policy. If you are looking to replace your handset and want a minimum of fuss in doing so, Back Door may be worth a shout. It is worth mentioning that the service positions itself as Amazon does, that is as a ‘service’ rather than a vendor.

If the seller becomes difficult for whatever reason, it isn’t explicitly detailed where the ‘service’ will step in to mediate the exchange. It isn’t to be expected that this will come about, but is worth bearing in mind regardless.

This applies too to Swappa, which has significant reach within the USA.  Though the service provides an easy way to find a refurbished handset, there are some guarantees which aren’t quite as clear as they should be.

None of this is to say that buying a refurbished phone is difficult, for this is far from the truth. There have never been so many second-hand units in need of a good home, which will provide excellent value for their owners, and for the environment too.

In buying a refurbished handset, doing your homework will always pay dividends.

NRL grand final 2021: how to watch Panthers vs Rabbitohs live online

It’s time for the NRL grand final, with the Penrith Panthers going head-to-head with the South Sydney Rabbitohs in Brisbane this Sunday, October 3.

NRL grand final 2021

• Penrith Panthers vs South Sydney Rabbitohs: Sunday, October 3 at 7:30pm AEDT

• How to watch in Australia: Free-to-air on Channel 9 or live streamed on 9Now

• How to watch from overseas: Watch NRL

The Panthers have fought their way back into the same spot they found themselves in last year – right on the cusp of a premiership win after a near-perfect season

But after their devastating grand final loss to the Melbourne Storm in 2020, they’ll be looking to turn their fortunes around.

The question is whether Penrith has learned enough from last year’s defeat to seize on tonight’s opportunity, or if the pressure to perform on the big stage will get in the way of victory.

Meanwhile, South Sydney will be without its star fullback, Latrell Mitchell, after he was suspended for a high tackle back in round 27. But the Rabbitohs have coach Wayne Bennett on-side, a man with seven premiership wins to his name.

Tonight will also be the last time that Rabbitohs captain, Adam Reynolds, will hit the field for the club, and the team will no doubt want to send him off with a premiership win. The issue here is that Reynolds has a groin injury which could be a concern for his kicking game.

Penrith’s injury list is much more daunting. Tevita Pangai Junior has been ruled out of the grand final, while Brian To’o, James Fisher-Harris, Moses Leota, Dylan Edwards and Nathan Cleary are all nursing injuries – it’ll be a lot to overcome for the Panthers.

The NRL grand final will be broadcast live on free-to-air on Channel 9 and live streamed on 9Now if you’re in Australia. If you’re overseas, there are options for you too. Here’s how you can watch it all unfold to see who takes home the premiership.

How to live stream NRL grand final 2021 in Australia

The only place to catch this year’s grand final live is on Channel 9.

As the Nine Network has broadcast rights to the NRL grand final, you’ll also be able to stream the game live or on demand on Channel 9’s catch-up app, 9Now. This platform is available on a web browser, and has apps for both Android and iOS.

The grand final decider won’t be available on Fox Footy or Kayo until after the match is finished, where it’ll be aired as a replay.

How to live stream NRL grand final 2021 from anywhere

If you’re a footy fan who happens to be living outside of Australia, New Zealand or the Pacific Islands, don’t worry. You can watch every moment no matter where you are on the Watch NRL streaming service.

For the grand final, Watch NRL has a new streaming option called the Grand Final Pass, which temporarily replaces the monthly plan. It gives customers the ability to watch the grand final live for US$29 / £22 / €25 / AU$40.

Watch NRL Grand Final Pass | US$29 / £22 / €25 / AU$40

The contents of this streaming service are only available to view outside of Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific Islands, but a subscription can be purchased from anywhere in the world. It allows you to pause and rewind live matches, and download games for offline viewing. While you can watch the livestream on desktop via the website, the Watch NRL app is also available for iOS, Android and Apple TV.

If you’re outside Australia and want to tune into the grand final, you’ll find that online access is geo-blocked. In order to get around that – and assuming it complies with the Ts & Cs of the broadcaster in question – you can download and use a VPN.

ExpressVPN is the world's top VPN right now
We’ve taken the time to try out all the biggest VPN providers and we found ExpressVPN to be the cream of the crop. It works with lots of devices and offers super fast connections across its many servers.

Perhaps best of all, it has a 30-day money back guarantee plus 3 months FREE when you subscribe for a year.

Many believed Bill Belichick would be the one to thrive after the breakup, but they couldn't have been more wrong, Brady leading his new team to their first league championship since 2002 at his first attempt.

But he returns to Foxborough not with his tail between his legs, but certainly stung by the Bucs' tepid 34-24 defeat by the Rams last weekend.

Belichick knows Brady better than anyone else in this sport, but knowing how to slow him down and actually executing the plan are two very different things. There have been few reasons to suggest that this iteration of the Pats are capable of stopping the GOAT.

The promising but inexperienced Mac Jones is in the awkward position of being Belichick's new squeeze, and up against Tampa Bay's ferocious defense, it's difficult not to fear for the rookie.

Follow our guide for how to watch the Buccaneers vs Patriots online and get an NFL live stream wherever you are in the world right now.

A serial entrepreneur on what makes and breaks a new business

Shirish Nadkarni is one of few serial entrepreneurs who can say he has exited successfully from every startup he has ever launched.

His first company, TeamOn Systems, was an early pioneer of the SaaS model, providing customers with business-grade email and calendaring in the cloud. Although not everyone understood the value of the idea in 1999, and the company later had to pivot to a slightly different product, it went on to be acquired by BlackBerry a few years later.

In 2007, Nadkarni founded Livemocha, the first language learning company to adopt a conversational approach to teaching. Although it was never profitable, Livemocha quickly accrued millions of users and was eventually snapped up by Rosetta Stone.

Finally, there was Zoomingo, a mobile app that helped shoppers identify stores running sales in their local area. At one point, the app managed to climb into the top ten in the Apple App Store (and top 25 on Android), and it too was acquired.

However, Nadkarni suggests his shining report card doesn't necessarily paint a full picture; he made many fundamental mistakes along the way. And while an exit is the goal of almost all entrepreneurs, Nadkarni never enjoyed the luxury of selling on his own terms, precisely when he wanted to.

An education at Microsoft

Nadkarni came to the US in the early 1980s to study computer science, which wasn’t taught widely back home in India. “I was fascinated by computers; what you could do with them, what you could build,” he explained.

After graduating from the University of Michigan, he undertook an MBA at Harvard Business School, with an eye on entrepreneurship. He hoped to learn how to blend technical skill with business know-how, a formula that was being applied to great effect in Silicon Valley.

However, Nadkarni suggests his education only truly began after he landed a job at Microsoft. It was here he gained practical experience and an appreciation for the qualities that separate a brilliant idea from a mediocre one.

“I learned a lot at Microsoft,” he said. “I learned how to build, launch and market great products, and I understood the business models. So I had a really good grounding that I could use to become successful in the startup environment.”

It’s hard to imagine, but Microsoft was itself a startup when Nardkarni first joined, with only roughly 1,000 employees. At the time, the company was looking to branch out into new product areas, beyond hardware, office software and its Windows OS.

Initially, Nadkarni was brought in to help launch the company’s first email product, Microsoft Mail, but he ended up working on a wide range of major projects during his twelve-year tenure.

In 1997, Nadkarni took charge of Microsoft’s first foray into the search market. After some discussion, the company took the decision to partner with a third-party, Inktomi, instead of building its own search engine in-house. Nadkarni says he attempted to convince Bill Gates to invest more resources into search, but Gates “wasn’t ready at that point”. It’s fun to imagine what might have been, had his decision been different.

Around the same time, he architected the launch of MSN.com. Microsoft was late to the party and looking to close the gap on the likes of Yahoo! and Excite, but Nadkarni had a trick up his sleeve: the $500 million Hotmail acquisition, Microsoft’s largest purchase at the time.

The rationale was that Hotmail, the first service to allow users to access their inbox via web browser, would give people a reason to return to MSN time and again. “We wanted to create a sticky solution that would keep users coming back. And email is a very sticky application; people check their email multiple times a day,” he explained.

Eventually, MSN grew to become one of the world’s largest web portals, and so it remains today. But it wasn’t just the strategic value of Hotmail that got Nadkarni excited - he had fallen in love with the product too.

“I thought Hotmail was a brilliant idea; providing web-based email for consumers. So I thought, why not offer enterprise-grade email in the cloud?”

At the height of the dotcom boom, Nadkarni waved a fond farewell to Microsoft to start a business of his own: TeamOn Systems.

Misconceptions and mistakes

Although Nadkarni has now retired from entrepreneurship, he is kept busy by a new pursuit: writing. His first book, called From Startup to Exit, aims to provide a complete resource for first-time founders.

Many startup manuals focus on one specific aspect, Nadkarni says, but very few unpack each step of the entrepreneurial journey. One of the first barriers, of course, is deciding to start a business in the first place.

“There are many misconceptions about what makes an entrepreneur; you don’t need to have started a business by the age of 15, or be a visionary leader like Bill Gates or Elon Musk,” Nadkarni said.

He concedes that leadership skills are important, but says there are other equally indispensable attributes: a knack for product, sales ability and doggedness in the face of adversity.

“In some respects, entrepreneurs are all cut from the same cloth, because they share a common pool of traits. But you can be quiet and successful, so long as you compensate in these other areas.”

Asked about the most common mistakes new founders make, Nadkarni told us that many people approach business from the wrong direction, by creating a product before they have a problem to solve with it.

“Often, technologists will build a solution and find out whether there are customers only later. But the most exciting businesses today - the likes of UiPath, Apptio etc. - are all built around specific problems identified by their founders,” he explained.

This is a mistake Nadkarni admits to making himself. He says he was convinced a cloud-based email system would prove immensely popular with businesses, but he failed to do the necessary market research. “I was the typical arrogant technologist.”

This backwards approach to product design also has a tendency to create further problems down the line, especially when it comes to fundraising. It’s all well and good to present venture capital firms with an attractive piece of technology and to spin a compelling story, but without evidence of traction they are unlikely to invest.

Nadkarni thinks that many startups attempt to raise capital too soon. Launching a new business has a lot to do with timing, he says, and the same can be said for knowing when to leave one behind.

To sell, or not to sell

When Nadkarni speaks about the sale of TeamOn Systems and Livemocha, two landmark achievements in his entrepreneurial career, it’s with a surprising hint of wistfulness.

Many business veterans have written about the difficulty of knowing when to sell but, in practice, plenty of founders discover the decision is effectively made for them. Such was the case for Nadkarni, who found he was always at the mercy of circumstance.

In the case of TeamOn Systems, the dotcom bubble had burst and the company had to make a choice between accepting an unfavorable offer of funding or selling to BlackBerry.

A few years later, the sale of Livemocha was made necessary by the financial crash. Although the company had built up a large user base, it was not yet turning a profit, which made raising funds in the new climate all but impossible.

Over the last eighteen months, meanwhile, many other founders will have found themselves in equally difficult positions, courtesy of the latest black swan event: the pandemic. And plenty of them will have had no decision but to shutter their businesses entirely.

The silver lining, Nadkarni suggests, is that from the ashes of an event like the pandemic a new wave of innovation almost always rises up. Specifically, he anticipates a surge in the adoption of automation and other AI-powered technologies, a permanent shift away from full-time office work and the continued rise of direct-to-consumer ecommerce models.

Right now, Nadkarni spends the majority of his time helping other people kick start new businesses. Asked whether he might start another business himself one day - perhaps to capitalize on these new trends - he chuckled and shook his head. “But I’m certainly working on another book.”
